Creating a Zip Folder on a Mac

This course requires most assignment submissions to be uploaded in the format of a zip folder. You must first save your work from Google Docs (on the Internet) onto your desktop or somewhere on your computer. The terms zip folder, zip file, and zip archive are used interchangeably. Here is how to create a zip folder on a Mac.
To create a zip folder with a single file:

  • First, find your file on your computer (desktop, documents folder, etc.)

  • Right click your file and select the "Compress (file name)" option.

  • An icon similar to this should appear next to your original file.

This now contains the file you compressed in a .zip format. You can now rename the zip file by double clicking slowly or by right clicking and selecting "Get Info". From there, under the 'Name & Extension' tab you can rename the .zip.

To create a zip archive with multiple files:
  • Locate all of the files you want to compress. It might be easiest to keep these files on your desktop or move them there for easy access.
  • Select all of the files you want by highlighting them with your cursor, or by holding down the "command" or "apple" key while clicking on each file.

  • Once all files are selected, right click and choose the "Compress X Items" option.

  • This file now contains all of the selected files in a .zip format. These files are compressed and you can rename this zip file as described above.

Uncompressing zip files (unzipping) on a Mac:
  • If you have a .zip file on your computer that you wish to "unzip" in order to view the contents of the zip archive or open any files within the archive, simple double-click on the .zip icon. A folder will appear containing the uncompressed contents of the zip file. You can now open these files or move them around on your computer if you wish.
