Purpose

This project discusses the impact of email. Merriam Webster Dictionary defines email (short for electronic mail) as "messages that are sent electronically from one computer to another" [1] (although email can be sent and received using other devies, such as smartphones). Email must adhere to the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). [2].

The purpose of email is to provide electonic asynchonous communication from one sender to one or more recipients. Asycnchrous means that the sender and recipient(s) do not have be online concurrently for the communication to occur.

Email addressed a problem in human communication that physical mail is:

• Slow, typically taking several days to deliver as compared to almost instantaneous email delivery;
• Expensive compared to the free delivery of email;
• Restricted to one-to-one communication instead of email's one-to-many capability;
• Not able to deliver the electronic documents that are essential in today's society.
