Video Editing and Production
In this assignment, you will learn how to create, edit, and produce your own original video. You will use WeVideo’s online video editor to optimize your video, splice together multiple clips, add music or audio tracks, and more. Once your video is complete, you will publish the video to Youtube.
Assignment Preparation
Read the following important information before starting this assignment:
- This video will be required for your course project exploring the impact of a computing innovation, therefore, it must be related to your project topic (see step 2 below for details).
- A digital recording device (digital camera, web camera, video camera, phone camera, etc.) is required to capture your own video footage for this assignment. If you do not own a digital recording device and cannot borrow one from a friend or family member, please contact your instructor immediately to make alternative arrangements.
- When recording video, hold a smartphone horizontally for better results when publishing to Youtube.
- This assignment teaches you how to produce a video using WeVideo's online video editor (free version). You are welcome to use other video editing software, such as iMovie, but all of the requirements listed below must be met (i.e. color font, transitions, two video clips, length of video, etc).
- Use the Chrome browser to complete this assignment.
- The assignment also has you create a document in which you explain how your video supports your project.
Step 1: Create Original Video Content
Create an original video (no longer than 60 seconds) that highlights at least one of the following aspects of the innovation that you are exploring in your project:
- Provide insight into a beneficial and/or harmful effect of the innovation.
- Illustrate and/or describe an impact of the innovation on society, economy, and/or culture.
To create the video, you must combine at least two video clips:
- Video 1 - Interview: One part of the video must be a clip interviewing a person about their belief of the impact of your project topic. You may choose to interview someone, or have someone interview you.
- Video 2 - Innovation Use: Another part of the video must show people engaged in using the innovation as it relates to one or both of the aspects listed above. For example, you may choose to record friends using computing devices to demonstrate a beneficial impact on communication, or record students working together using video chat to demonstrate collaboration. Be creative!
You have much creative freedom in this step but keep in mind that you will ultimately combine the two videos to create a single video of no more than 60 seconds for your project.
Step 2: WeVideo Tutorial
Step 3: Edit Original Video
- Import your video footage into WeVideo (use the Importing Media Overview guide for help). Must use at least two separate videos. It must be evident that two separate videos were used (different locations, clothing, etc).
- Drag and drop your imported video clips into the timeline.
- Edit the video using the trimming techniques learned in the tutorial to remove any unwanted sections. Unnecessary footage (i.e. extended periods of stillness, mistakes, etc.) should be cut from the video.
- This video is meant to be short so you must cut each of your videos down so that the total video time is at least 30 seconds and no more than 60 seconds.
Use the skills you learned in the tutorial to complete the following steps. If you forgot how to do something, refer back to the tutorial or use the WeVideo Academy videos for reference.
Step 4: Adding Text
- Create a title slide that includes your topic name.
- Make the title slide last for at least 5 seconds. This counts to the 60 second maximum time length of the final video.
- Use at least one more instance of text elsewhere in your video.
- Change the color of the font at least once.
Step 5: Adding Transitions
- Use a transition effect between the title slide and the beginning of video.
- Use at least 2 additional instances of transitions.
Step 6: Adding an Audio Track
- Add a music audio track to play during the 5 second duration of the title slide. Do not add music during the interview portion.
Step 7: Publishing Video
Once you have finished editing your video, follow these instructions to publish your video on Youtube.
- Name your video "Lastname_video", where "Lastname" is your last name (ex. "Washington_video"). Note that the video may take a little while to finish processing but you will be emailed once it’s ready.
- Take note of the published video URLs on WeVideo and Youtube; this is how others will view your video.
Step 8: Written Support For Artifact (Video)
Create document called lastname_video that includes the following prompts (with their label letter) and your answers that convey a deep level of understanding about your video artifact. Each of the two responses may be no longer than 200 words.
- Explain how your video artifact elaborates or highlights a deep aspect of your project topic. Demonstrate that your video artifact accomplished ONE of the following requirements:
- Provided insight into a beneficial and/or harmful effect of the innovation.
- Illustrated or described an impact of the innovation on society, economy, and/or culture.
- Clearly describe the computing tools, techniques, and development process that you used to create your video artifact. Your description must be clear enough so that someone can follow your description and reproduce the artifact. Include how you captured the video clips, uploaded them, edited them, and produced a final video.
Step 9: Screen Capture Video
Follow these instructions [2:54] to install the Screencastify extension to your Google Chrome browser (you may choose to use a different screen capture tool if you prefer).
Visit a website about your innovation topic.
- Use Screencastify in Chrome to record approximately 30 seconds of video where you scroll through the web site, click relevant links, and use your mouse to point at things on the web sites, while you narrate why the websites on your screen are important to help you make a point about your topic.
- Import the video clip into WeVideo to edit it down to approximately 30 seconds of good video.
- Add a title (either a slide or text over the begining of the video).
- Name the video “Lastname_screencapture”, where "Lastname" is your last name (ex. "Washington_video").
